Games played Oct. 2

  • Brewers defeat Mets 5-3 to tie best-of-three Wild Card series at 1-1. As he did in Game 1, CF Harrison Bader (Mets) enters as defensive replacement in 8th inning but does not get opportunity to bat. Game 3 takes place October 3 at 7pm ET (10/2/2024)
  • 3B Alex Bregman (Astros), possibly playing last game with Houston, goes 1-for-4 in 5-2 loss to Tigers. Win gives Detroit a 2-game sweep of Wild Card series and knocks Astros out of playoffs. Bregman had gone 2-for-4 in Game 1 defeat (10/2/2024)
  • LHP Max Fried (Braves), in perhaps final appearance with Atlanta, gets hammered for 8 hits and 5 earned runs over just 2 innings in 5-4 loss to Padres. Victory earns San Diego a 2-game sweep of Wild Card series and ends Braves’ playoffs run (10/2/2024)
  • Royals beat Orioles 2-1 to complete 2-game sweep of Wild Card series and delete Baltimore from playoffs. Loss denies RHP Dean Kremer, scheduled to start third game of playoffs, a chance to pitch (10/2/2024)

News and Stats

  • Of 18 Jews who played in MLB this season, five are entering free agency. Impressively, Baseball America ranks all four Jewish position players among the Top 50 position players available for 2025 season. Astros 3B Alex Bregman, who earned $20-million in 2024, ranks #3. He is followed by Diamondbacks DH Joc Pederson ($12.5-million), at #18; Mets CF Harrison Bader ($10.5-million), at #26; and Angels CF Kevin Pillar ($1-million), at #46. The fifth Jewish free agent, Braves LHP Max Fried, earned $10.5-million. What is their market value? Check out Spotrac’s projections here (10/1/2024)
  • Astros fans gave 3B Alex Bregman a standing ovation on September 25 to honor what might prove to be his final home game with team. But if teammate and nine-time All Star 2B Jose Altuve has anything to do with it, Bregman isn’t going anywhere. “I don’t want to think about my last game with Breggy,” Altuve says after team’s season-ending loss. “I’m pretty confident he’s going to be our third baseman next year. We have to. We’re not going to be the same organization without him” (10/2/2024)
  • Cardinals announce that team advisor Chaim Bloom, who previously earned fame as baseball chief for both Red Sox and Rays, will take over as president of baseball operations in 2026 (9/30/2024)
  • Win some, lose some: A 1-1 split in September 30 doubleheader between Braves (LHP Max Fried) and Mets (CF Harrison Bader) earns each team a Wild Card slot in playoffs. Unfortunately for DH Joc Pederson, those wins also knock Diamondbacks out of playoff race (9/30/2024)
  • Up and down: Phillies call-up RHP Max Lazar for playoffs, and Cubs do same with 1B Matt Mervis. Two days earlier, on September 29, Yankees reassign RHP Scott Effross to Triple A (10/1/2024)
