2016 highlights

  • Hit five home runs in 12 at-bats during a three-game series against Tampa Bay: two home runs on May 13, 2016, none on May 14, and three on May 15. The streak was special in several ways (see article). First, it fell one HR short of tying the A.L. record for most HRs in a three-game series. Second, each of the three HRs traveled at least 425 feet — the first time that’s happened since ESPN.com began tracking home-run distance in 2009. (According to JBN research, there were 67 three-HR games in the Majors from 2009 through 5/15/2016, one of them Valencia’s.) Third, Valencia was only the second visiting player to hit three HRs in a game in Tropicana field history. Fourth, Valencia’s third HR of the day converted a 6-5 deficit into a 7-6 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.

2014 highlights

  • In addition to his regular 3B spot (66 games), played 1B (20 games) and 2B (6 games) for first time in MLB
  • One of just 16 Major Leaguers to hit 2 sacrifice flies in a game (9/3/2014)
  • Hit .301 with a .357 in home games
  • Hit .321 vs. lefties

On being Jewish

  • Obtained Israeli citizenship in 2019 so that he could play for Team Israel in its pursuit of a 2020 Olympic berth
  • According to this 2019 article, Valencia had a bar mitzvah as a child. He was raised by his Jewish mother and his Cuban   father, who converted to Judaism
