  • 2004: Jason Marquis (St. Louis Cardinals) and Greg Maddux (Chicago Cubs) become first opposing pitchers since 1950 to steal bases in same game, with Maddux leading charge in 3rd inning and Marquis matching him in 5th. Maddux’s theft is one of 11 in career. By contrast, theft by Marquis is his sole attempt in 721 career plate appearances
  • 1947: OF Goody Rosen (Boston Red Sox/AAA) makes 8 trips to plate in doubleheader wins over Cleveland Indians affiliate and reaches bases every time, delivering 4 singles and 4 walks
  • 1937: Detroit Tigers are down 4-0 in 3rd inning when 1B Hank Greenberg hits third of 11 career grand-slam HRs to tie game. Tigers go on to beat Chicago White Sox 12-9, and Greenberg ends day 2-for-3 with 4 RBIs and 2 walks
  • 1899: Leo Fishel (New York Giants) becomes first Jewish pitcher in Major League history, striking out 6 batters in 7-3, complete-game loss to Philadelphia Phillies. Fishel, who goes 1-for-4 with single at plate, will never again play in Majors. Says The Rank and File of 19th Century Major League Baseball, “It is a mystery why he never received another chance”

  • Levi Sterling, a 17-year-old pitcher at Notre Dame H.S. in Sherman Oaks, Calif., ranks #38 in Baseball America’s updated list of 2024 Top MLB Draft Prospects. According to BA, the 6’4″ righthander has a fastball that has “touched” 94-mph and is likely to gain “significantly more velocity,” sports a promising curveball and changeup, and is “one of the better strike-throwers in the class,” a group that includes high-school as well as college ballplayers. In 2023, Sterling went 1-0 with 1.68 ERA in five games with USA Baseball's national 18-and-under team. He has committed to play ball at U. of Texas (5/3/2024)
